Katie Chaplin
I am an artist based in North Yorkshire. I began silk painting in 2003 and, after being told not to bother painting faces on silk because it's almost impossible, I began to develop my own technique for doing just that! It took me a very long time to experiment with different methods until I found my style.
I live my life around Japanese culture and study tea ceremony, paper and fabric crafts, as well as teaching myself Japanese while I work! You can probably see the influence of ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) and manga comics in all my paintings, although I also love fashion illustration and the Japanese 'Superflat' style of art, especially the work of Chiho Aoshima.
In 2007 I began using shibori in my work, and also started to incorporate recycled kimono in my jewellery and art work. This has proved really popular and my work can be seen in several galleries, online stores and craft shops. Please see the events calendar page for details of upcoming shows and exhibitions, I look forward to meeting you!
